The reasons for Putin's warm welcome in Israel are named

Israel is practically the only country outside the countries of the former USSR that shares Moscow's view of the history of World War II. In this regard, the Russian side in Israel received the “attitude that it deserves.” The reasons for the warm welcome for Al Monitor were listed by Kommersant observer Marianna Belenkaya.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, as a representative of the victorious country, has become one of the main guests of the forum. In addition, the Russian delegation attended the opening of the monument to the heroes of the Blockade in Israel, which touched the Russians. During the events, Israeli politicians and officials recalled the family tragedy of the Russian leader and the role of the Red Army in the victory over fascism, performed Soviet songs in Hebrew and read poetry by the poetess Anna Akhmatova .

She recalls that the Prime Minister of the Jewish state, Benjamin Netanyahu, took part in the celebration of Victory Day in the Russian capital in 2018, while the allies in the anti-Hitler coalition ignored the invitation of Russia. Tel Aviv shares the Russian vision of the causes of World War II against the backdrop of attempts by a number of Western countries to hold Moscow accountable for the events of those years, says the columnist.

At the same time, Israel is convinced that Putin’s visit will help to attract Russian-speaking voters in the elections. Tel Aviv, in turn, gave Moscow what it most needed - the opportunity to demonstrate itself as a peacemaker.

The arrival of the Russian delegation in Israel is nothing more than a tribute to traditions, the author concludes. According to her, Moscow understands that the Palestinian-Israeli settlement has practically no prospects, but it is ready to play the role of mediator and provide assistance - especially in anticipation of US plans to present the "Agreement of the Century."

In her opinion, after the warm welcome of the Russian delegation in Jerusalem, we can expect a softening in the disagreements of the parties, including issues of vision of problems in the Middle East and bilateral relations.

On January 23, the Russian leader arrived in Israel on Holocaust Remembrance Day. He has already met with the Prime Minister, as well as the President of Israel Reuven Rivlin, and the mother of the Israeli woman convicted of smuggling hashish Naama Issahar.
